Which Nepresso Machine and Cups Should You Buy

Updated: Apr 16, 2022

The tips and tricks I have learned from using my Nespresso machine. Where I find deals on the pods, etc

Full disclosure, I've never owned a Keurig. I lived with my brother for 2 months that owned one and have just stayed at several friends houses that had a Keurig. I never felt like I could get a STRONG enough coffee flavor from the Keurig and I actually returned a Keurig that I got as a Christmas present!

So, now enter the Nespresso! I actually looked up the machine when I found out that they have Ristretto cups as an option. Starbucks serves ristretto shots and it was the smoothest, creamiest espresso I have ever had. The nespresso serves delicious espresso with variations of coffee options. I like my coffee STRONG with lots of cream and this allows me to make the perfect cup every day.

MACHINES

I was ECSTATIC at the variations of machines available as counter space is something I

am always aware of when buying an appliance. You can see the video of my slim machine here or buy it here. I love how slim it is, however it is a rather LONG machine, but would fit on the countertop. My one qualm with a smaller unit, is I have to empty out the pods and refill the water tank 2-3x per week. I do not have a larger unit, but my assumption is that their cartridge for holding the pods and water would be bigger

I had also looked into the unit here which is not as long

as mine, but it was wider than I had wanted! This model also comes in different colors!

BUYING PODS

I buy on both Amazon and www.nespresso.com

The first round of pods that I bought were these. I liked that it offered a variety of their

original line and it was a good way to trying out the pods. Also the biggest seller to me was that I was interested in 4 out of the 5 flavors: Ispirazione Firenze Arpeggio (Purple), Ispirazione Ristretto Italian (Black), Ispirazione Roma (Grey), Ispirazione Genova Livanto (Gold) and Capriccio (Green). I honestly have not done a price analysis of buying the pods on Amazon vs Nespresso themselves, but I will say that Nespresso always has deals, which may make it more enticing (see below). They also ship relatively quickly maybe 3-4 days!

HOW TO USE YOUR OWN COFFEE

There are ways to use your own, non-nespresso coffee. I have personally tried these and they were pretty easy to use. Unfortunately, the coffee still wasn't that strong when I used this, but please note, this may not have been an issues with the item. According to the Bouj Dude, it was probably because I was using pre-ground coffee beans - as he grinds his own coffee beans fresh and has specific containers. Don't worry, we will definitely write a full post on this later. There are also these that have a seal for the top which would probably help the pod be less watery. However, I never went with these as the seal looked a little bit more complicated than just putting the stainless steel top on.

IS IT WORTH IT?

For several reasons, I believe it is absolutely worth. As an avid Starbucks goer and lover of strong espresso, Nespresso is one of the BEST options you have for home espresso. As cool as espresso machines look they take up a lot of counter space, are more expensive and the cleaning is a bit of a pain. This is great to just drop the capsules in and press a button in the morning. And the quality of the espresso is great! Most of all, I love that they make it so easy to recycle, so I don't feel like I am contributing to waste

WASTE

Nespresso sends you recycle bags, free of charge with every purchase! This is a pre-paid plastic bag where you drop used pods in and bring to the UPS store. I could go 4 months or more without having to drop the bag off (even if I used my nespresso 2x per day) the bags are rather large. As I am usually doing UPS returns for Amazon returns, I just bring the bag when I'm going to UPS. They also offer some drop off locations as well which is easily accessible via their app. Please note, the first location I tried to drop off my pods at, ended up being permanently closed and this wasn't noted on their app so double-check before driving to the place!

Nespresso then breaks down the pods in their factories and recycles everything

DEALS

  • Free shipping on orders of $35 at www.nespresso.com

  • Free coffee samples with every order

  • Nespresso ALWAYS has deals running on their site and they make them pretty easy to find: I have gotten free espresso cups with plates, glass water bottle and tote. However, sometimes the items require a pretty significant amount of coffee sleeves to be purchased and the sleeves do expire, so you have to plan accordingly
